Stop TRYING To Lose Weight

If you’ve been TRYING to lose weight for what feels like forever, listen up; it’s time to stop trying and start doing.

I’m Dr Deb Butler, master weight loss coach, board-certified chiropractor and acupuncturist, certified nutritionist and life coach. I help women who are going through menopause end their struggle with weight — ultimately helping them reconnect with and manifest their most authentic desires — FINALLY!

How do you talk to yourself?

How do you talk to yourself when you want to do something you have never done before or maybe thought about a lot and haven’t done it?

Let’s think about a word…and this word is TRYING. I don’t think a word that can create less of the results you want than the word Try. So, why do so many people use it when it comes to losing weight? I can bet you’ve said it to yourself, A LOT?

There is such a vast difference between saying “I’m going to try and lose weight” and “I’m going to do what it takes to lose weight” can you feel the difference in the feeling it gives you? The difference comes from “I’m going to try” and “I’m going to do.”

Imagine this, you have to have life-saving surgery, and then the surgeon turns around and says to you, “Well, I’m going to try and get there” how would that make you feel? Not great, right? You’re used to being booked in for the procedure, the surgery happening, and you feel confident in that. It comes down to the difference between doing and trying.

So, when it comes to how you think or talk to people about losing weight and you say you’re “trying to lose weight”, you send a vibration through your body that doesn’t feel very determined. It’s all very iffy and wishy-washy. Then when you don’t end up with your results, it’s all based on the thought that you will only try to do it.

Now, let’s rephrase and say, “I’m going to lose weight, and this is how I’m going to do it” you set off a completely different vibration in your body. You feel more determined by taking out the word TRY and replacing it with “this is what I’m going to do for the next week. I’m going to eat when I’m hungry and stop when I’m full.” I know there is every chance that you prove to yourself that you will do it! Just by thinking, “I’m going to do it.”

Over the four years of podcasts with over one million downloads, I talk a lot about eating between the 2’s. This is a very powerful tool that I have taught which is eating when you’re hungry and stopping when you’re full. I support this by talking about a scale that goes from a -10 to +10 — eating at the whisper of hunger being a -2 and stopping at the whisper of fullness being a +2. This is such an important tool, and if you use only this, you will maintain a naturally thin weight.

Our minds are so fascinating as our thoughts always provoke a feeling.  The word try means just that – ‘let’s try and do this?’.  It’s a word we use so much without much thought of the feeling it creates, but I want to replace it with ‘let’s do this.’

So many people I have helped over the years have said, “I’ve tried to do the food journal, but I give up after a while”.  Oh my gosh, there’s that word again, TRY.

One of the tools I like to use with my clients is to write down what you eat, and your physical hunger scale before and after you’ve eaten. You can get my FREE companion book by clicking the link HERE. This book contains food journals, physical and emotional hunger scales and much more.

If you say to yourself, “I’m going to try and get that book,” there’s maybe a 50-50 chance that you will get the book.  But, if you replace it with “I’m going to get the book”, there’s a 99% chance you will get it because as we know, thoughts drive feelings which provokes actions.

Now let’s talk to your brain and tell it “for the next week we are going to eat between the 2’s, we are going to keep our food journal and write down exactly what we’ve eaten, what time and how we felt when we did.” When using “going to” you create a positive pathway in your brain which will bring you the results you desire and deserve.

So, you’ve decided that you’re going to use the tools I’ve given you.  You’ve decided you’re not going to try. You have to determine that you will succeed.

The more actions you take, the more chance you have of getting it done. It’s what I call massive action. Massive action is thinking you’re going to do something, create something, do something – not thinking I’m going to try something.

I’m also a huge believer in self-care, but many people I speak with say “they try to have compassion and practice self-care.” Now I want you to replace “try” with “I’m going to show myself compassion.”

Next time you catch yourself sitting with a negative thought about yourself, say something kind. Don’t “try”. Say, “I’m going to be kinder to myself today.”

Let me leave you with this, the next time you say ‘I’m going to try,’ replace it with ‘I’m going to do.’ Let’s change the vibrations and feelings in your body. If not now, then when?
