Ep 315: How to Measure Your Urges

Did you know that urges or an urgent desire can be counted as an emotion? But compared to the physical hunger scale, trying to understand the emotional hunger scale and trying to pinpoint those urges on the scale might be more difficult. One of my listeners, Josephine, expressed in a letter to me how she’s having difficulty getting her brain to allow urges and eventually do so without being tempted by a treat.

In this episode, I’m going to provide Josephine and all of you with pointers on urges and how you can apply them to a number system so you can better measure and understand your urges. It’s important to remember that you’re not always going to be able to allow urges, but these strategies will help you get started on strengthening your urge muscles.

Before you can lift the heavier weights, you need to lift the lighter ones first – and it’s the same with urges. So if you’re someone like Josephine whose working on managing urges, start by becoming aware of how you manage the weaker ones, so you’ll be empowered to know what to do when those stronger urges come up.
