Self Coddling: Why It Hurts You Long Term

PODCAST EPISODE 485

Are you coddling yourself when you think you’re loving yourself? Many of us confuse self coddling with self love, but there’s a big difference between the two.

In this episode, I share insights from my mentor Brooke Castillo about the difference between self coddling and self love. I explain how self coddling is letting yourself off the hook in ways that hurt you long term – like eating cake after a hard day or telling yourself “you deserve this” when reaching for food. This feels compassionate in the moment but is actually just giving in to urges and avoiding what’s really going on. It’s emotional eating dressed up as self care. Self love, on the other hand, is the real deal – honest and strong, not harsh or punishing. It sounds like “you’re tired, let’s rest, not eat” or “I know how hard this feeling is, but you can handle it.” Sometimes the most self loving thing you can do is let yourself feel an urge without giving in to it. I connect this to the ThINNER Peace process and explain how true self love is like being a loving parent to yourself – sometimes saying no because you deserve truth and peace, not because you don’t deserve comfort.

Tune in to learn how to distinguish between coddling and loving yourself, and start practicing true self love this week. Enjoy the show!
