Ep 8 Using a Food Journal or Food Diary to Build Mindful Eating Habits

PODCAST EPISODE 8

Now, I want to introduce you to my food journal. The difference in my food journals and anything you’ve ever used before, is the real purpose of this food journal is to find out more about what goes on in that mind of yours using all the tools I’ve taught you so far: PHS, EHS and the 4 Types of Eating. And as you are journaling, YOU are learning to be the observer of yourself. The compassionate observer, right? Not the mean punisher you’ve taught yourself to be. Remember, you are your science experiment and journaling is the gathering of information. If you look at my food journals, you would write down the time, what you’re eating, PHS before and after, and why (the 4 categories of joy fuel, fog or storm,) and recording your thoughts.

Some of my clients journal everything and it is easier for them. Some of my clients have a hard time journaling anything. I provide some choices to make it easier, depending on your personality. One thing for sure is when you write it helps you become more aware.

If you decide to write down everything you will be richly rewarded for your devoted attention, but if you don’t or won’t do this, there are some easier ways to start that still require attention but might work better for your personality type. Starting with some awareness is always better than no awareness.

When you become aware and question your thoughts, everything can change. What do you think might be the RESULT of thinking, “I only eat food when my body asks and I stop when it says stop, no matter what I’m eating”? Fuel food turns to fog when you go beyond a +2. I’ve had so many friends and clients who think they can eat as much as they want if its veggies. Why? That is so dangerous. Can you see that is training your body to overeat? I found in my WW days I was so afraid of going hungry, I would stuff myself with veggies. Once I decided to think on purpose I could eat again when I got hungry again. That changed everything. There are so many things you can think that you are completely unaware of that lead to weight gain instead of weight loss. Journaling helps you become very aware of what those thoughts are.
