Many people think the kitchen is a gathering place when they THINK they don’t have anything to do. I have so many clients who wander through their kitchens and cupboards looking for something to do when they’re bored.
In this episode I give an example of another real coaching session with one of my listeners regarding boredom.
This listener had told me she now asks herself every time she wanders in the kitchen refrigerator, “Are you hungry?” She says this awareness in itself has been an eye opener for her, the mere mindfulness of being aware that she’s not hungry and she’s looking in the fridge. This has stopped so much fog eating for her.
But, stopping yourself from doing something when you don’t know what you’re thinking in the first place is very difficult. Sometimes she can do it, but sometimes it’s very difficult for her.
I think she’s white knuckling it. I asked her what she was feeling when she wanders in the kitchen. Probably bored she reported.
Food interestingly enough brings up all your thoughts and belief systems. First you have to know what you’re thinking and then you can decide on purpose if you want to continue to think it.
For this listener, thinking she’s only useful when she’s DOING something is fascinating and debilitating for her. She’s learned to eat when she’s not doing anything, and it calms her down when she eats because in that mindless moment, it makes “sense.” Now she’s DOING something (eating when she’s not hungry). My guess is this thought shows up everywhere in her life-not just around food.
She can white knuckle herself in the kitchen refrigerator or she can decide to think something else that she might equally believe. If she wants to stop wandering in the kitchen in the first place, she’s going to gently guide her mind to another thought, so she can do nothing and feel peaceful instead of bored.

She stated that she learned more about herself and food in 30 minutes of coaching with me than 30+ years of dieting!
