In this episode we will discuss how to put yourself first, make yourself your #1 project and make your other projects secondary to YOU. You know how to do this because you know how to do big projects, but you have never considered yourself your major project.
I’ve been talking a lot to you about different tools, mindfulness of your thoughts and compassion, the hunger scale, emotions, exercise and the last couple episodes on how you affect your body by the stress you load on it. To most of you, you love the information, but some have trouble actually using it on a daily basis. Let’s face it, if you’re eating between the twos you’re eating more frequently and need to have beautiful fuel food available to you. If you’re journaling, you’re taking time to write, if you’re doing the minimums of exercise, you take a lot of attention.
You are a piece of work all by your lonesome. YOU are a project. Are you willing to put yourself first and make yourself your #1 project? What would you have to believe and think in order to do this? I was thinking about this as I was getting ready to leave for my day. I was using my observer mind and being mindful as I was making myself breakfast and then I realized I would need a lunch and then I realized I would need a snack and then I realized I would be playing after at the park and I needed my play clothes and shoes. I just stopped with this aha moment, “Deb you are a piece of work and you take a lot of time and effort.” I could’ve just ignored all of this and left without eating or being prepared, but I didn’t want the effects of not enough fuel food and no play.
In order to be at my best I knew it took all of this and I am committed to myself, and I am important enough to take this time, but it is a lot. I realized, to be there for you and my patients, requires I put myself first, feel good and am able to operate at my optimum. It seems like we could just forgo ourselves, but never our kids or job, as if we don’t count or we won’t notice. I want you to notice what your neglect to yourself feels like and then decide on purpose to stop it and put yourself first. Your weight is just one symptom, but it seems to be the biggest attention getter. So I say thank goodness for your weight gain, it is an invitation to treat yourself differently, and what better time than the transition time of menopause?
