Ep 30 Menopause is Finally the Time to Separate the Joy of Eating from the Joy of Celebrating

In this episode, I talk about how you can connect to the pure joy of eating a food or foods and connect to the pure joy of the moment. They don’t have to be treated separately.

I provide examples from two clients and how they used the celebration of the moment to DISCONNECT from their own happiness, instead of staying connected to the happiness they were already feeling.

One client had a great day at her office when she had finished a long-term project. She couldn’t wait to go out and celebrate that night. She associates celebrating a big occasion with overeating and over drinking.

Another client got a huge promotion and wanted to go to her favorite Mexican restaurant so she could overeat her favorite foods and drink a bottle of wine. Until that moment she believed overeating, over drinking and celebrating joyous events went together. As if you can’t have one without the other.

She sat in the parking lot and didn’t go in; she said it was the hardest thing she’d ever done.

I told her it’s hard because you’re working against the oldest part of your brain that is saying, “What are we going to do? We gotta eat.” The automatic process of eat and get a dopamine response from the brain is what we do: it feels so good; don’t you want it???? This is when she had to call in her prefrontal cortex, the part of your brain that sits in the front of your forehead. She had to say to herself, “This is just my brain, this is not me.” She did and she was able to leave the restaurant. She interrupted the cycle she has been repeating in her brain for years. That is hard!!! But it’s only hard until the brain learns something new, and it will.

You must separate the joy of food from the joy of your celebration. They are separate. Your brain has combined them and you believe they now go together. Mindless thinking goes with mindless eating. Mindful thinking goes with mindful eating.
