In this episode I go over in detail fuel food and joy eating, and wrapping your mind around thoughts that will help you lose weight and feel great. It all starts in the mind, right?

In the last episode we discussed the 4 ways of eating: fuel, joy, fog and storm. Choosing fuel food and eating between the 2’s is really our sweet spot. Why? Because you’re eating food your body requires (hence the name, fuel) and eating just enough to fill your tank all day long. If you did this all day long, you most assuredly would be at your body’s most natural weight. Don’t you agree? But what you need to think in order to do this is what we’re going talking about today.

If you tell yourself, “I HAVE to eat this way and I can’t have anything else”, that leads to you feeling deprived and left out of the party. In fact, many of my clients have thought any time they tried to change their eating, the fun was over. Have you thought like this? I know I have. That kind of thinking leads to negative feelings. I know I like to have fun in my life and if eating right or eating fuel foods means no fun, what do you think you might do with food thinking that way — eat fuel food or choose a food you equate with fun? Hmmmm I wonder what that might be.

Here’s the truth as I see it and feel free try these thoughts on for the right feeling. “Choosing and eating beautiful fuel foods is what I want most for myself. It is what allows me to have fun in my life, having and enjoying a body I take care of and that takes care of me. It is not fun to overeat non-fuel foods and feel like crap for hours or days. That is not fun.” Do you agree? But in the moment of not paying attention your mind might think it’s missing out. Being the mindful person you are becoming, you catch that sneaky thought and see it for what it really is: not true. Really, when I sit down to eat a fuel meal, there is nothing about it I don’t enjoy. I also enjoy paying attention and stopping at a +2. Why? Because I feel great and am ready for anything. That is fun!! When you choose to think like this it will create a feeling of confidence. Eating fuel food and losing weight almost feels effortless. Because it is… there is no resistance.

The second category is joy eating and it’s my favorite. This is where you choose non-fuel foods on purpose, purely for the enjoyment, not for the fuel factor. If you choose joy foods 10-20% of your day, your body will still be healthy. In fact, this is what I call moderation. Moderation is one of my favorite words. Here’s where you can get into trouble with joy foods: choosing them too often during the day. Many of my clients in the beginning think most of their joy comes from food and they find themselves needing to eat a lot more than 20% joy food a day. When this happens you need to find more joy within yourself and this is the perfect hint from your body. Most joy really comes from within not from without.
